HOW SHOULD TECHNICIANS PREPARE FOR COMPETITION?
It’s wise to seek guidance from a previous competitor/winner in the form of a mentor. Many nail technicians become consultants and mentors after winning globally recognized competitions, training teams, or individuals. Their leadership is invaluable and worth it. Practice is essential to refine skills and perfect timing; you can practice on every client in the salon. It’s nice to encourage your clients to support you and give you encouragement. Their support can truly impact your confidence. Find a good model, prepare with a champion, refresh your skills, and get tips and tricks from those who have already won at globally recognized competitions. Always read the rules and scoring sheets to see where points are awarded.
WHAT COMPETITORS SHOULD BRING TO THE COMPETITION TO COMPETE?
Confidence, a full kit (read the rules and make sure you have all the necessary items). Check if you need to bring a table lamp, a bucket, and make sure you know if certain products need to be unopened. Make sure all products are labeled, don’t forget an armrest, towel, cardigan, and a large scarf for your model. If she’s too hot, she needs to be able to easily remove clothing, and similarly, she needs to be able to easily wrap up if she’s cold. A watch for your model to keep track of time and stay informed. A water bottle for you and your model; you don’t want to find yourself thirsty in that environment.
WHAT CAN BE DONE TO CALM BEFORE/ DURING COMPETITION ANXIETY AND NERVES?
Everyone suffers from stage fright and nerves, no matter how many times they compete, it’s normal in this environment.
So, breathe deeply, set the right mindset, and focus solely on the competition. Don’t overthink it – don’t let the size of the arena or the people you see there distract you. Everyone has been in your shoes; everyone has entered the arena for the first time at some point. Just take a deep breath and go with the flow.
You’ll enjoy the experience.
WHAT SHOULD A COMPETITOR CONSIDER BEFORE THE COMPETITION?
The lighting in the room and ensuring they have all the necessary products with them. Always pack your competition kit at least two weeks before the competition and have a checklist to ensure everything is packed.
WHAT SHOULD A COMPETITOR DO/ASK AFTER THE COMPETITION?
If the competitor wishes, they can request scoring sheets after the competition ends, and the judges are available to explain them.
